WE-R1 Summer Classic Recap

With the July Live Period closing in upon us, AAU teams are looking for tuneup tournaments. On Saturday, the first annual WE-R1 Summer Classic in Delaware took place. With a lineup that included Team Takeover (DC), New Heights, Philly Pride, New Jersey Playaz, Team Philly and more on the U15, U16 and U17 level. Here is a breakdown of the top performers and their recruitment.

Obi Enechionyia - 2014 6'9 Power Forward from Saint James (MD)

The surprise standout of the entire event, Enechionyia was a rebounding and scoring machine as he was aggressive on the boards and finished inside for his Team Takeover DC U16 squad. With a jumper, the rising junior can block shots, get to the basket and rebound. He uses his mid-range game to his benefit and always seems to be in attack mode. With excellent size though, he still needs to work on his post moves and posting up his defender in general. Currently holding offers from Xavier, VCU and UMass, Enechionyia is going to be a high-major prospect at the end of the day. On Monday, Maryland offered the talented power forward. Villanova, Georgetown, Temple, George Mason, George Washington, Virginia, West Virginia and Miami will all closely examine him this summer. He has visited Maryland, Georgetown, Temple, VCU, George Washington and Villanova, and states that the Hoyas, Terrapins, Owls and Colonials are recruiting him the hardest.

Austin Tilghman - 2014 6'1 Point Guard from St. Andrew's (DE)

A unique point guard because of his size, Tilghman is a complete player who will catch the eye of high, mid and low-major schools this July. He does well in the pick and roll, and can be a big man's best friend as he has a knack for getting his post players the ball. Tilghman has a college-ready body that his fairly chizzled for his age. The rising junior uses his body in a variety of ways and is versatile in his ability to post up defenders as a guard. Tilghman must work on his mid-range and pullup jumper as it is inconsistent. He is decivingly quick, too, and this is what led him to picking up his first offer from La Salle last week. The Atlantic Ten school hosted him for an unofficial visit and offered later. St. Joseph's, Western Kentucky, Virginia and Marquette also keep in contact with the WE-R1 talent who is playing a combo U16 and U17 ball this summer. With a system that La Salle runs, Tilghman's versatility as a guard would be needed.

Dion Wiley - 2014 6'3 Shooting Guard from Potomac (MD)

In a talented Team Takeover U16 backcourt, Wiley is one of the primary scorers for the Nike squad. A standout shooter who can penetrate, Wiley also does a good job of help defense. His footwork is an area the rising junior feels he needs to improve upon. Maryland, Rutgers and Georgetown have offered thus far, while Villanova, George Mason, Miami, UMass, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech and Virginia have expressed interest. As he has only visited local schools in Maryland and Georgetown, Wiley is planning to visit Miami and Rutgers in August. While it is still early in the recruitment of the Potomac star, he says that Maryland is standing out the most to him right now.

Muhammad-Ali Abdur Rahkman - 2014 6'4 Combo Guard from Allentown Central Catholic (PA)

A low-key, under the radar guard with Blue Chips AAU, Abdur Rahkman is drawing a lot of attention around the east coast. While he has decided to leave Allentown Central Catholic in order to pursue other opportunities during his junior year, he is bound to breakout. Abdur Rahkman can get to the basket, as well as drive and kick. With good size and the ability to defend multiple positions on the court, he has the opportunity to play at a higher level than most would assume. He needs to gain a solid foundation in his jumper and play harder without the rock in his possession. Offers from Delaware and Houston are on the table to go along with interest from SMU, Temple, Xavier and Wisconsin. He has visited the Philadelphia and Madison campus as the Owls and Badgers are standing out to the Pennsylvania native thus far.

Phil Booth - 2014 6'2 Point Guard from Mount St. Joseph's (MD)

One of the most promising young players for Team Takeover's U16 squad, Booth's development the next few years will determine just how good he can be. He has the ability to pass the ball to the open man, rebound and push the ball. Booth makes the most of a fast pace offense as he pushes the ball, gets into the lane, or can spot up for an open shot. While he can score here and there, Booth needs to improve on being a more aggressive player on the offensive side of the ball. His well rounded ability as a point has gotten the rising junior offers from Maryland, Georgetown, Rutgers, Indiana, Seton Hall, St. Joseph's, Xavier, Villanova and South Florida. Booth also holds interest from West Virginia, NC State, Virginia Tech, Iowa, George Mason and Ohio State. He may visit Indiana soon, but remains wide open. Maryland, Georgetown and Villanova are the three schools recruiting the 2014 talent the hardest.

Ben Bentil - 2014 6'8 Combo Forward from St. Andrew's (DE)

A native of Ghana, Bentil came into spring as a virtual sleeper and is now ranked in the Rivals50 at No. 49 for the class of 2014. Bentil's all around ability on defense is something he takes pride in, and a trait that coaches love about him. He blocks and alters shots, rebounds relentlessly, defends various positions in the post and on the wing, and runs the floor extremely well. While he does not show off his athleticism all the time, it is there. Bentil has a soon-to-be pro body with a developing offensive game that just needs some work on his jump shot and ability to play on the wing and outside of the post. While he is not focused on his recruitment or offers, the likes of Notre Dame, Maryland, St. Joseph's, Rutgers, Villanova, Penn State, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and more are recruiting him. North Carolina, Syracuse, Baylor, Indiana and other top notch schools are keeping their eye on him this summer. Will Bentil make the push to becoming one of the elite forwards in the nation with WE-R1?

Recruit Scoop Notes

2014 Imhotep Charter/Team Philly (PA) small forward Basil Thompson took two unofficial visits this week. After tripping to Delaware, the first school to offer him, Thompson went to George Mason for a visit. An offer could come from the CAA school as early as next month. Penn State, Nebraska, Temple and St. Joseph's are also involved.

2014 St. John's/Team Takeover (DC) point guard Tre Campbell had a strong weekend. He holds offers from George Washington and Towson with interest from VCU, Cincinnati, Miami, Notre Damn, George Mason, Georgetown and Virginia. With visits under his belt to George Washington and George Mason, the rising junior believes that Miami and VCU are recruiting him the hardest at the moment.

2013 Curtis/New Heights (NY) small forward Hassan Martin is one of the hottest up and coming prospects on the market right now. Rhode Island, Creighton, Iowa State, Providence, UMass, George Washington, St. Joseph's, Duquesne, Kansas State and Indiana are making a strong push and constantly keeping tabs on him, according to his AAU coach Chris Alesi.

2015 Plainfield/NJ Playaz power forward Ahmad Baker is working on becoming one of the top big men in the northeast. In all five tournaments thus far with the U15 Playaz squad, the team has won all five tournaments - including two at the U17 level. He is creating quite a buzz and only claims interest from local school Fairleigh Dickinson at the moment. Look for more schools to get involved with him following July.

2013 Cardinal Hayes/New Heights (NY) point guard Naasir Williams has become a priority for several mid-major schools as their next floor general. Fairfield, Samford, Canisius, Norfolk State, Monmouth and Richmond, among others, are making a strong push for the small but quick and efficient guard, who will have to find a school to prep at this fall.

2013 Westtown (PA) power forward Yilret Yiljep had a strong showing and is proving why he is a legitimate power forward. He has gotten much strong, but his lack in consistency could downgrade his stock at the end of the day. He lists offers from La Salle, Temple, Robert Morris, Quinnipiac, Brown, James Madison, Lafayette and Davidson, with interest from Colgate, Bucknell, Monmouth, Liberty and Niagara. With a decision looming before school and no intentions of taking anymore visits for now, it will be interesting to see what level Yiljep winds up at.
